How to Find Your Device Model Number
Learn where to find model numbers on routers, printers, smoke alarms, chargers, TVs, appliances, laptops, cameras, and smart home devices.
Why the model number matters
The exact model number is one of the most important details when decoding a device light. A red light, orange light, green light, blue light, or blinking pattern can mean different things across brands, product generations, and firmware versions.
Searching only by color can lead to the wrong fix. Searching by model, device type, color, and pattern gives you a much better result.
Common places to check
- Routers and modems: bottom label, back label, app settings, admin dashboard, or original box.
- Printers: front panel, inside cartridge door, rear label, app, driver software, or printer settings page.
- Smoke alarms and CO detectors: back label, mounting plate, battery door, or printed model/date label.
- TVs and streaming devices: back label, system settings, original box, or device app.
- Laptops: bottom case, BIOS/system information screen, support app, or serial/model sticker.
- Appliances: door frame, side panel, inside lid, filter door, or rear label.
What to write down
Write down the brand, model number, light color, blink pattern, light label, and whether the device is also beeping, showing an error message, overheating, or refusing to work.
When model numbers are safety-critical
For smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, vehicle dashboard warnings, medical devices, batteries, chargers, and electrical devices, model-specific guidance matters more. Confirm the official manual before taking major action.
